Norwood CSA Food Co-op: What is the Norwood CSA and How to Join

What is the Norwood CSA and How to Join

How To Join the Norwood CSA

Our membership is open two times a year, in the late winter/early spring for the Summer Share, and in the fall for the Winter Share. If you are interested in joining the Norwood CSA, email norwoodcsa@gmail.com and we will reach out when our membership is open.

What is the Norwood CSA

A Community Sponsored Agriculture or (CSA) is food co-op that connects New York City families with local Farmers. When you become a member of the Norwood CSA Food Co-op you will receive a share of the organic harvest of the Norwich Meadows Farm (www.norwichmeadowsfarm.com), as well as items from neighboring farms. This CSA is affiliated with Just Food (www.justfood.org). Our goal is to re-create the direct link between the farmer and consumer, giving consumers fresh and more wholesome organic foods.

How Does the CSA Work

A CSA is not like shopping at the supermarket. Like the name implies, you are sharing in the harvest of the farm rather than picking and choosing the exact items you want each week like at the grocery store. Your weekly share will be fresh organic vegetables and fruits grown in season and picked just prior to delivery.

The quantity and variety of items in the share will vary weekly, depending on weather and season and what the farm is growing. You will learn to enjoy a wider variety of seasonal vegetables. The quantity of food varies based on the harvest (there is risk involved), but we usually receive between 7 and 9 different items per week.

CSA members pay for an entire season of produce upfront (typically $150-$500) depending on your type of share. This early bulk payment enables your farmer to plan for the season, purchase new seed, make equipment repairs, and more.

This CSA is run by members. Each member must sign up for volunteer shifts during the season that facilitate the distribution of the items from the farm and help keep the CSA running.

Why Join the Norwood CSA

There are many reasons that people join our CSA. Some benefits of joining our CSA are; a closer connection to where your food comes from, access to high quality, organic produce, reduction of your carbon footprint and protection of our environment, support of local economies and farms, support of food security in your community, and getting to meet and know your neighbors.

In an average year, the CSA reflects a savings of about 15-20% off what you would pay in a green market for a comparable amount of local organic produce.
